Honoring America’s Iconic Mammal

Every July, we celebrate National Bison Month, a time to recognize the American bison’s role in shaping our natural and cultural history. As the national mammal of the United States, bison symbolize strength, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the American plains.

Here at Animal World & Snake Farm Zoo, we’re proud to be home to this incredible species. Throughout the month, we invite you to come face-to-face with these gentle giants and learn more about their story — from near extinction to a powerful symbol of conservation success.

Plan your visit this July and meet our bison up close!

Why Bison Matter: Their History & Cultural Significance

Bison once roamed the North American continent in massive herds, with estimates of over 30 million animals before European settlement. For centuries, they played a vital role in the ecosystem and were a cornerstone of life for many Indigenous cultures, providing food, shelter, tools, and spiritual value.

Tragically, by the late 1800s, bison were driven to the brink of extinction due to overhunting and westward expansion. Their population dropped to just a few hundred — a shocking reminder of how quickly a species can disappear.

But thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, including work by tribal nations, wildlife organizations, and zoos like ours, bison are making a comeback. Their story is one of resilience, restoration, and the importance of protecting what we almost lost.

At the zoo, we’re proud to educate guests about the cultural and ecological importance of bison.

Bison at Our Zoo: Meet The Herd

When you visit Animal World & Snake Farm Zoo, you’ll have the rare opportunity to get up close to one of North America’s most iconic animals. Our small herd includes a mix of male and female bison, each with their own unique personality and habits that guests love getting to know.

Our bison habitat is designed to reflect the wide-open grasslands these animals once freely roamed. Visitors can often catch them grazing, wallowing in the dirt, or cooling off under the Texas sun — just as they would in the wild.

Looking for an even closer experience? Don’t miss our Bison Banquet, one of the most popular summer activities at the zoo. During this special feeding encounter, you’ll get to offer snacks to these gentle giants while learning all about their behavior, diet, and the important role they play in grassland ecosystems.

It’s a one-of-a-kind opportunity to safely interact with a species that helped shape the history of our continent.

Bison Conservation Today: How Zoos Help

The story of the American bison is one of dramatic loss and remarkable recovery. In the late 1800s, bison populations plummeted from tens of millions to just a few hundred due to overhunting and habitat destruction. Thanks to conservation efforts, including breeding programs and habitat protection, bison are no longer on the brink of extinction. However, their survival still depends on ongoing support.

Zoos like Animal World & Snake Farm Zoo play an important role in this effort. By providing expert care, offering educational opportunities for the public, and participating in species management programs, we help ensure the long-term future of these incredible animals.

Every visit to our zoo supports these efforts. When guests connect with our bison in person, they walk away with a greater appreciation for wildlife and a better understanding of why conservation matters.

Together, we can continue to protect and preserve bison for future generations.
